Entertainment
New York City has become an inspiration to the American movie industry. An example of an avant-garde film shot in the Big Apple is entitled “Manhatta.” New York City is the second largest center for the movie industry in the U.S., next to Hollywood. It is home to two major cultural centers with international underpinnings, namely, the Carnegie Hall and Metropolitan Museum of Art. The famed Broadway musical is also staged on Broadway in New York City.
Media
New York City is the largest media market in North America and an international center for television, radio, advertising, and print industries. Some of the media giants based in New York City include Viacom, the News Corporation, Time Warner, and the Hearst Corporation. The broadcast industry originated in New York and the city is home to four major American television networks namely, NBC, CBS, FOX and ABC. Two national dailies also reside in the Big Apple namely, The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times.
Performing Arts
The Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, the largest performing arts institution in the U.S., is also found in New York City. The center is composed of the Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Vivian Beaumont Theatre, the Metropolitan Opera, the Juilliard School, the New York City Opera, the New York Philharmonic, the Alice Tully Hall, and the New York City Ballet. SummerStage is another performing arts center that offers during the summer free dance, theater and concert events across all five boroughs of the city and regularly exhibits performances of free music and dramatic plays at Central Park.Local Cuisine
New York City cuisine, just like its other features, is diverse, inspired by immigrants and dining patrons. Italian and Jewish immigrants popularized the Big Apple for their New York-style pizza, cheesecake and bagels. Mediterranean foods like kebabs and falafels are a common comestible on the streets of New York. The Big Apple also offers a plethora of the finest culinary restaurants in the U.S.
Architectural Buildings
The architectural buildings of New York City embody a wide range of artistic styles. These include the Chrysler Building with an Art Deco design which is considered to be the finest building in the Big Apple; and the Woolworth Building, a skyscraper built with scaled gothic details. The Seagram Building, on the other hand, depicts an international style of architecture with a distinct faÁade built with bronze-toned I-beams that evoke the structure of the building.
Parks
The city of New York boasts of various community parks and public beaches. Central Park in Manhattan, a favorite setting in several romantic movies in Hollywood, is the most visited city park in the U.S. with several million visitors every year, followed by the Lincoln Park in Chicago which ranks second in terms of the number of visitors accounted annually. New York City’s third largest park is the Flushing Meadows- Corona Park in Queens. Prospect Park is another city park found in Brooklyn.
